DNetwork organises workshop on preparation for work in the hospitality industry for the deaf.

On the 4th and 5th of October 2021, DNetwork - Jaringan Kerja Disabilitas organized a workshop on work preparation in the hospitality industry specially for the deaf. The workshop was part of a series of the SAMA (Setara Akses Masuk Kerja - Equal Access to Work) program which was initiated through a collaboration between DNetwork, BEDO, GIZ, Puspadi and Difalink. The workshop took place at Mövenpick Hotel, Jimbaran, and eight special needs students from grade 12 of SLB N2 Denpasar and two alumni of SLB N2 Denpasar and SLB N 2 Badung participated.

The workshop materials, which were created by the DNetwork team, consist of 9 modules including Why We Need to Work, Introduction to the Hospitality Industry, Pre-Work Preparation, How to Create a CV and Portfolio, Introduction to the Recruitment Process, Job Contract, Work Orientation, Communication at the Workplace, and Career Development. Participants joined the workshop enthusiastically and interactively especially because the materials were delivered by those who are experienced in the hospitality industry and human resources. A sign language interpreter who was a representative from the special needs school was also provided during the workshop. The participants were introduced to several departments within a hotel, such as Housekeeping, Kitchen and Front Office departments, and followed a short tour to see how each department operates.

The ten participants are all projected to join an internship program in a hotel or other service-related businesses after joining the workshop. The objective is of course to give comprehensive understanding and experience in applying new knowledge gained from the workshops. The DNetwork team curated the internship talents to match their interests with the available internship opportunities.

On the 25th of October, the internship recruitment process started at Sofitel Hotel where there was an open internship opportunity in the Housekeeping department. Three SAMA participants joined the interview, assisted by DNetwork and representatives of SLB N2 Denpasar’s teachers as sign language interpreters. The next step for DNetwork is to connect the rest of the seven SAMA participants to join the recruitment process at the other companies that have internship opportunities open, in order to offer an equal internship experience for all.
